Flash Mob
01.4.2010
I was supposed to go see Avatar in 3D IMAX with some friends last night but I thought I’d be too tired to stay awake through the whole thing so I decided not to go. Then I found out a band called Flash Mob was playing at 12th and Porter. My friend, Tyler, told me they were rad, so I decided to shoot the show. Flash Mob snapped me out of my drowsiness in the first 10 seconds of their set.
Flash Mob flat out rocks. You won’t see me go crazy over every single band I shoot. But Flash Mob is the real deal. I know bands sometimes hate to be compared to other bands, but Flash Mob strikes me as a little bit poppier Paramore. But I never got the feeling they were copying their style. Lead singer Meghan Kabir’s voice is booming. The band is tight. If they’d had an album available, I would have bought it right after the show. They just got signed to Warner Brothers, so their music will hopefully be available to the masses in a year. In the meantime, their MySpace will have to do. I included a link at the bottom.
- First, I need to apologize to Flash Mob’s drummer! I took photos of him, but clearly not enough as none of the ones I took were great (and, hence, I didn’t post them). Bro, the next time you guys play in Nashville, I promise to get you a couple great ones!
- That problem was created by my lack of attention to getting coverage. I tend to shoot too much of a couple band members which limits the shots I get from the rest of the band. My next shoot, this will be in my top three priorities.
- The lighting was much better at 12th and Porter today as compared to The Magic Show concert on NYE. HOWEVER, such fast changing light sequences means that auto-focus can really get confused. I seemed to have a whole bunch of soft-focused photos (i.e. they were a lot or a little blurry).
- I’ve realized that to consistently freeze a guitar player’s strumming hand, the shutter speed should be 1/250 or higher. Even at 1/250, there is occasional blurriness. You can get sharp focus on lower shutter speeds, but the frequency of that is pretty low.

Throughout 2009, I shot a crazy number of photos but never posted them. For 40 consecutive days, I'm going to post these shoots. Something new every day!
