1 Timothy 6:9–10 - But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

A step-by-step summary… The desire to be wealthy is:

  1. A temptation
  2. Traps people in a snare
  3. Leads to senseless and harmful desires
  4. Which plunge people into ruin and destruction

And what is the primary destruction this leads to in verse 10? Of all the possibilities, what the worst thing Paul sees? “Some have wandered away from the faith…”

May we do everything we can to protect our following of Jesus. May we forsake the harmful things we chase and the pointless things we embrace. May we drop them all and see him as the great reward and treasure he is. And seek and crave seeing him more and knowing more about God’s ways that we might obey them. May we not be deceived by the patterns of the world in regards to money or anything else.
